9:30 AM Saturday, September 14th, at Golden Gate Fields

Interested in learning about Genetic markers and profiling in Thoroughbred racing and breeding? This relatively new science shows there are well documented genetic markers which the great race horses have in common. Genetic profiling can tell from a hair sample, collected from any Thoroughbred horse, how many of these markers (alleles) your racing prospect has in common with the ďGreatsĒ. Historically this information has only been available to extremely wealthy and powerful players in our sport.

Please join us on Saturday, September 14th, at Golden Gate Fields for an informative discussion where Dr. Tammariello will illuminate the possibilities this new science has to offer and also answer all your questions.

The Northern California Equine Association wants to lift the veil of mystery off this subject. We are honored to have as our guest lecturer for September, Dr. Steven Tammariello. Dr. Tammariello is an Associate Professor of Molecular Genetics and the Director of the Institute for Equine Genomics at Binghamton University in New York, and the owner of ThoroughGen LLC, a New York-based equine genomics company. Dr. Tammariello has extensive research experience in molecular physiology, proteomics and genomics and has published papers in scientific journals including the Journal of Neuroscience, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), and Cellular Immunology. He has been the recipient of multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). His research lab is currently studying the genetics of athleticism in horses and humans, and the role of oxidative stress in human neurodegenerative disease.

The meeting will start promptly at 9:30 AM in the Bay View Lounge with a 45 minute presentation by Dr. Tammariello, followed by a Q&A forum Come early and bring an open mind. There will be a $10/head fee at the door to cover the cost of renting the room and flying Dr. Tammariello out to California. Please send a reply info@norcalequine.org if you intend to attend so we can be sure to have enough seating for the group.

We hope you'll find time to join us for another fun and information packed meeting at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday, April 17th. The forum will be a panel of the "big guns", representing the four major players of the horse racing machinery, CTT, TOC, CTBA and Golden Gate Fields Race Track. The intent is to help everyone understand how the machine works and how as individuals we can solve our own problems within the system. This is an opportunity to talk first hand to the people that shape our industry. If you've ever felt frustrated or helpless within the system, don't miss this rare opportunity.

The meeting will gather at 10:30 AM in the Bay View Lounge and finish before the first race at 12:45. There will be coffee, tea, orange juice, champagne and pastries to munch on throughout the discussion. The price of $10 for members, $12 for guests, covers turf club entrance, parking, program, the meeting, beverages and snacks. We're reserving a block of tables in the turf club for those who wish to stay and have lunch while watching the San Francisco Mile stakes race card. There is a buffet or ala carte dining available at regular dining room prices.

Please feel free to pass this invitation on to your friends and clients.

Last meeting I was approached by many people at the track who lamented they hadn't been invited. Our goal is to get all horse enthusiasts in Northern California on our mailing list but it will take all of your help to develop such a list.

A quick RSVP to let us know how many people to expect will really help this meeting run smoothly. Hope to see you there.
